Club statement - COVID-19 Coronavirus

Following the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) disease which now threatens all our communities, the club has taken the difficult decision to suspend ALL football activities. This decision follows the recommendations of Government to ‘be socially responsible’ and ‘avoid social gatherings’ and is in line with the actions of national and local football associations and football leagues, who have suspended grassroots football. It has also taken into consideration the views of many representatives within the club.

Whickham Fellside YFC is a family club with a long reach into the local community. At the centre of this community is a representation of parents, grandparents, great-grandparents and others with health conditions who are at significant risk from this disease. As a football club we are charged with responsibilities to safeguard our members, not expose them to further risk. Consequently we will not add to that risk and vulnerability by continuing to participate in non-essential activities.

The decision to suspend all football activities is understandably emotive and has never happened in the 40-year history of the club. The club cannot act against the scientific and medical advice available in the effort to tackle the virus. To act otherwise would be irresponsible, foolish and may do untold damage to the reputation of the club, placing it in an extremely vulnerable position.

Football activities will resume when it is safe to do so, and with your support the club will recover and again take its place as one of the best supported junior clubs in the North East. But in the meantime I expect all managers, coaches and committee members to continue their positions as great ambassadors for the club and step up to maintain regular contact with you throughout this difficult period.

For now, I wish you all well. Please take care of one another and we will see you all again in the very near future.

Thank you and best wishes

Dave Nelthorpe – Club Chairman - On behalf of WFYFC Committee

The club

This season we have 29 teams playing in our distinctive yellow and green colours, from Under-7 to Under-17's, a huge age-range of youth football with many multiple age group teams.  We are a totally voluntarily run and funded group and rely on the generosity of our members, their families, sponsors, charitable groups and donators to keep us in existence.

The future looks very good as we have taken on the responsibility of our facility and pitches at Watergate where a 35-Year Lease on an Asset Transfer has been obtained. Our Partnership with Emmanuel College is important to our future and we also look to build Partnership’s with other individuals and organisations as we move forward.  We have invested and developed our Watergate area and Clubhouse to include the magnificent Watergate Café, run by Sharon Johnson.

Being a part of a team and a Club is an important part of a young person's development. We are delighted to be able to give our members that opportunity, we hope that you will consider supporting us in any way possible as we develop.

Safe environment for Football

We are a Charter Standard Community Club and all our Coaches are CRC (DBS) and Child Protection checked; all of them have at least the FA Level 1 Coaching qualification. We continue to hold our Charter Status standing.  One of the best run and structured Clubs in the area, we are proud of our success on the pitch, with many of our teams performing well. We have over 320 young people as members and are proud of what we have achieved.

Wildcats and girls football development

SSE Wildcats is a joint initiative between The Football Association and SSE designed to inspire girls aged between 5-11 to be involved in football. SSE Wildcats Girls’ Football Centres from The FA provide girls with regular opportunities to play football and take part in organised sessions in a fun and engaging environment. Over 1,400 centres have now been established nationwide.
