The following is the warm up I tend to use with both keepers I regularly work with (U15/U17) at their matches.

Whilst space to warm up in as well as available time can be an issue, it is key that we move away from the traditional "fire shots at the keeper" warm up to ensure that they go onto the pitch fully prepared both physically and mentally. This warm up can generally be completed in around 20/25 mins

This is only a guide and obviously can be adjusted to suit the age of the keeper

DRILL

Start with gentle side to side movement
across goal(post to penalty area 2-3 times)
Progress to sharper/quicker movement
6 yd box to post

COACHING POINTS

When moving quicker, check for
correct hand position/choppier
steps/heels not clicking-head should
stay
at same height(not bobbing),
all movement from waist downwards

 DRILL

Set of 3 cones-sidestep through
and into position for scoop/cup/”w”/dive
left and right. Tend to work through these in order
5/10 deliveries of each(4/5 dives each side)

COACHING POINTS

Look for good balance through cones,
as above, and set position. Check
technique at each stage and adjust
delivery to keeper age/ability ie

roll/kick/half volley-adjust pace and
for scoop/cup etc look to progress to
delivery off-centre, checking for
movement of feet, bringing body in
line with ball

DRILL

Throw 5-6 gentle high balls unopposed-progress
to throwing 5-6 standing in eye line, then further
5-6, looking to put gentle challenge in.
Deliver crosses into box-vary speed/angle/height of delivery(I tend to work in an arc,
corner flag to corner flag)

COACHING POINTS

Check for catch at high point, eyes on
 ball watching into hands. Encourage
“KEEPERS” shout and ensure this
is once delivery assessed but early
enough to be effective. Encourage
movement to attack ball at high point
with crosses, rather than waiting to collect

 DRILL

Quick one/two touch footwork passing ball back and
forth(use cones if required as a guide)
Increase distance gradually to approx 25/30yds, vary
pace and delivery ie bouncing ball

COACHING POINTS

Encourage use of left & right foot
Look for first touch out of feet, ideally
around 45 degree angle

 DRILL

Keeper positioned on edge of penalty area-stand around
half way and knock a ball ahead. Aim to dribble around
keeper and score. Vary distance kicked ahead-4/5 of these

COACHING POINTS

Look for judgement of keeper-should
be on front foot and if able to clear
or 50/50, coming for ball. Encourage
shout of “KEEPERS”
when coming for it

If not able to win ball, should
retreat quickly, watching at all times
then slowly close space, lowering
body when closer and maintaining
balance, making challenge only when
certain of winning ball, otherwise
staying on feet and delaying

I tend to finish with shots from outside of box at varying angles and delivery,
checking for correct technique at all times, ie are feet moving to avoid a dive,
reacting if spilled into danger areas

Always aim to make saves possible and always finish on a good save,
so starting the match full of confidence.
