Retirement of Club Chairman

At the AGM on the 24th of June 2018, Bill Baty retired as Club Chairman after 29 years with our Club. Suitable recognition was made by our Club President and Secretary and also by others about the contribution Bill has made and he was warmly acknowledge and recognised on the evening. After the meeting several past Coaches and Guests joined the gathering where a buffet had been organised in the Gibside Hotel. John Topping and Dave Cleary from Durham FA presented Bill with an inscribed piece of glassware on behalf of Durham FA in recognition of the work he has done for WFYFC and Youth Football. Bill suitably replied and thanked everyone for their kindness and said he was sad to leave the Club, but well satisfied that it was well equipped and very able to meet the demands of youth football in the future.

Season 2018-2019

As we rapidly approach the start of yet another season within our Club, its 39th, details of it will come out in our "Letter to Parents'' which will be sent out by email attachment either directly by our Club or through your own Team Manager.

Last season we introduced our new Registration and Subscripiton system, which has run for one year and we reflect at its successes and its falldowns. These will be addressed in a positive way and the details are in the Letter to Parents. If anyone has any concerns about matters within this letter then just contact our Club Secretary or Chairman who will happily help.

As a growing Club we need to communicate regularly with our Members, Parents and Coaches and this will be a priority in the new season. However we must all remember that all our Officials are volunteers and carry out their roles for the benefit of our Club and their Team, giving up their valuable time in doing so. Please show them the respect they are due for the time they put in.

As a Club we are always looking at ways to improve ourselves and what we offer and so if anyone has a skill or an idea that they would like to share with us then please contact us. We have vacancies on our Management Board which will be finalised at the Club AGM on the 24th of June but if you have something to contribute then please let us know.

NOTE: Coaches, Parents and Members should be aware that our Welfare and Safeguarding Officers are SUE BROADBENT and DAVE NELTHORPE. Business Cards are being produced to be distributed to everyone with their contact details and also the reverse of the Card gives details of Emergency Contact numbers for Watergate. It is a requirement that all Coaches and Assistants know these details as spot checks by the FA will demonstrate a need to carry these, or this information, at all times. A PDF of this is to be found in the Policies and Procedures area of this Website.

Our Club Chairman and Football Development Officer are retiring this year after having put in almost 40 years of work within our Club between them. We wish them well in the future and thank them for the huge contribution they have made to WFYFC.

High Sheriff of Tyne & Wear 2018, Thomas Broadbent

At the Annual Award Ceremony held on Tuesday 13th of March at HMS Calliope, our Club was delighted to receive an award of £500 for our Community Work. The event was attended by Sue Broadbent and Thomas Broadbent from our U15Y received the Award on behalf of our Club. Well done Thomas and everyone, this is testimony to the work we do in our Community.

Barrie Smith, South Shields FC and WFYFC

Ex Whickham Fellside YFC player, Barrie Smith, played at Wembley recently for South Shields in the FA Vase Final.

Barry played for us in a very successful Team Coached by George Ainsley in the mid to late 90's.

Barry is part of the very impressive South Shields set up which saw them win multiple trophies and titles this season. His achievements show what can happen if a player works hard. Well done Barry, we are proud of you and remember where you first started your football.

U14 Yellow Team CUP FINAL SUCCESS!

Our Under 14 Yellow Team were involved in a League Cup Final at the Dunston UTS Stadium on Saturday 29th of April. Attended by a large crowd the boys enjoyed playing on this Northern League pitch with all the facilities it offers. Going 1-0 up was a great start but when Redheugh came back to 1-1 the game then went into extra time. Redheugh scored to make it 2-1 and nerves and fitness began to play a part. We equalised in the second half of extra time to make it 2-2 and then scored in the dying minutes to record a 3-2 victory.

These boys represesnted our Club in an exceptional and sporting manner and all credit to our opponents Redheugh for giving us such a good game. The victorious team paraded their trophy around the ground to the delight of parents and supporters. Well done to MARK KELL and SUE BROADBENT who Coach this fine group of young men. Many thanks also to everyone who supported them and our Club.

Watergate Pitches (2017)

As everyone is aware, our pitches have taken a battering from rainfall over the last few months (and every year as well), resulting in the pitches having a lot of standing water and becoming unsafe under foot areas. This has led to a lot of frustration from our players, parents and Coaches.

The Club has therefore put plans into place to rectify this but it will be a lengthy process. We are investing a huge amount of money to purchase our own equipment to maintain our pitches to a standard that we believe our members and parents should expect. Extensive equipment to alleviate drainage problems, seeding, spiking, hollow tining, weeding, spraying and marking will all be purchased in a total bill of £50,000+. With support from the Football Foundation and a plan to follow from the Institute of Groundsmen, Paul Kelly and his team will be working towards making our playing surfaces the best in the borough and beyond.

Anyone have any spare time and interested in volunteering to assist this area of our Club where full training will be given, are asked to contact Paul Kelly directly. His details are in the Manager's and Club Management areas of this website.

Creating Smiles Award 2016

Village Dental Practice team up with Whickham Fellside Youth Football Club (WFYFC) to award the 'Creating Smiles' Award for 2016

WFYFC are delighted to announce that they have joined forces with the Village Dental Practice (based in Whickham) to create a special "Creating smiles" trophy award for 2016.

The award is to recognise a player within the club who plays for the love of football and being involved with an inclusive and passionate community football club like WFYFC. For the Village Dental Practice and WFYFC, this is not about the most talented players or the top scorer but more those players that are smiling when they are losing 2-0, enjoying the game when the weather is atrocious but are still loving playing with their friends or those players that are the "bench warmers": players who will always give 100% regardless of ability when they are on the pitch and getting their game time.Nominations for the award are open to all registered players (2015/2016 season) from U7s to U18s.

Nominations can come from parents, grandparents, guardians, coaches, manager and team mates or anyone involved with the club. Nominations need only be around 150 words but need to tell us why the player being nominated meets the above criteria and why they deserve the award (please include nominee's name and team).

Nominations can be emailed to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or they can be printed off and put in the nomination box on the reception desk in the Village Dental Practice itself. Nominations are open now and close on MONDAY 2nd MAY 2016 (nominations received after this date WILL NOT be considered). The Village Dental Practice will shortlist three finalists and being invited for photographs.

The decision of the winner will be made by the Village Dental Practice judging panel and their decision is final. The winner of the award will receive their "Creating smiles" trophy on our Club's presentation night on 28th May 2016 and a special prize.

We hope that everyone involved in the club supports this award and what it stands for. Please speak to Paul Mitchell (WFYFC team manager) if there are any questions regards the award.  To discuss any other sponsorship involvement with the club, please contact any member of the club's executive committee.GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE WHO ENTERS!!!!!!!!

The Winning Smiles Award was presented at our Annual Presentation Night on Saturday 28th of May. The worthy winner was JANE FLETCHER from the U9 Blue Team. Special recognition was made to Harrison Mitchell of the U10 Blues and Jamie Thew of the U8 Yelllows.

Presenting the Award was Amy Dixon (the Treatment Co-ordinator) and Dr. Alex Linton (one of the Dentists). Several members of staff from the VDP were present and witnessed a very busy evening. We thank them for their sponsorship and we hope our association is long and mutually beneficial.

ANYONE INTERESTED? SEE BELOW

Hi Bill,

I’m a researcher at Twenty Twenty TV, who are in the process of making series 6 and 7 of “Show Me What You’re Made Of” for CBBC. In the show we take five children to the farms and factories where their favourite things are made to live and work alongside the people whose job it is to produce their favourite food, clothes, toys, etc. Series 6 will be filmed abroad, and series 7 will be in the UK.

We’re currently looking for applicants between the ages of 11-14 for both series, and I was wondering whether you might be able to put the word out to members of Whickham Fellside Youth Football Club in case anyone is interested in taking part? WFYFC were well represented at the Pitch Improvement
Programme Review held at the Stadium of Light

Durham County FA in partnership Northumberland FA and the Institute of Groundsmanship hosted a Pitch Review with number of local club Groundsman and Sports Organisations at the Stadium of Light, home of Sunderland AFC. WFYFC were represented by DAVE NELTHORPE and KEVIN THOMPSON.
The Pitch Improvement Programme (PIP) is being rolled out across the country with all County FA’s having targets to achieve in this area over the next four years. The programmes will run in parallel, and can be used in combination to help clubs improve their facilities.

The event involved a presentation by Ian Powell, Regional Pitch Advisor from the IOG (Institute of Groundmanship) who discussed many different aspects of grounds maintenance which although not significantly technical, can have a huge positive impact on grass pitches.

Representatives from Durham County FA clubs and pitch providers were then given the opportunity to go "pitch side" and received a guided tour of both the pitch itself and some of the behind the scenes activities and technology which are the foundation of the fantastic condition the Stadium of Light pitch now enjoys courtesy of Sunderland’s Head Groundsman, Adrian Partridge.

An additional aspect of the PIP is to support clubs who are looking for grant funding to support any larger scale pitch improvements they may be planning. Clubs can have their pitch assessed for quality and receive as part of the feedback, a maintenance programme and advice and guidance as regarding the steps to take to improve the playing surface. The reports also support funding applications by providing baseline evidence to identify need and give indications on how any money received would be spent, ensuring ongoing improvements over future seasons.

Over the next 12 months further support sessions, as well as locally delivered courses, will be provided to help volunteers to improve their knowledge with the long term aim of addressing on of the major challenges football faces over the coming years. For further information on the Pitch Improvement Programme and how it can potentially support your club, please contact Chris Hutchinson Facilities & Investment Officer at Durham County FA via This email address is being protected from spambots. Whickham Fellside YFC have already participated in a full pitch inspection and analysis of samples at Watergate and are now in the programme of possible support to address the problems we have with drainage etc. The solution is not an overnight one but one that we recognise and are doing something about. Thanks to Dave and Kevin for looking at this important side of Club life for us, anyone else interested in the fascinating area of Club life should contact Dave Nelthorpe.

 Message from an Old Boy!

(Above: Lloyd with the team we sponsored on his trip to Africa)

Below is an email from LLOYD MILLER who has chosen to make his passion for Football his career. Working with NUFC in the community and establishing his credentials and qualifications at University, Lloyd is now travelling the world doing what he does well. We wish him all the very best in the future and it is good that he remembers where he started his football.

Hi Steve,
I hope you had a great Xmas and New Year, and all is well. A lot has happened since moving to Australia over this past year.

I have since accepted a new job in New York starting April, and have moved back home to sunny Newcastle, and will be working for the Foundation temporarily.

I did wonder whether you would be interested in me helping deliver some sessions at Whickham Fellside whilst I'm back?

The new role in New York will be 'Assistant Director', involving the planning of the club's curriculum and Coach Education. With this in mind, I wondered whether delivering a Coach Education session, similar to Coach the Coach would be of interest?

Appreciate this email comes out of the blue, and may not be viaible.

Look forward to hearing from you soon.

Best Wishes,   LLOYD MILLER

 Message about an Old Boy!

Delighted to hear today that ex-Whickham Fellside player, BEN HEDLEY has made the bench for the Morecambe First Team tomorrow (16th January) against Yeovil Town.

Ben joined Morecambe as an Under-18 in the summer, and has impressed so much that after only a few months at the Club he has been given his chance with the seasoned professionals. Hope he gets on and scores a typical Hedsey raker from 20 yards!

Well done Ben and best of luck from everyone at WFYFC!

Managers and Assistants,

Christmas Raffle

At the last Managers Meeting in November I distributed the Raffle Tickets for the Christmas Bottle Draw. Not every manager was present at that meeting and not everyone took their allocation of tickets. I have received only four sets of tickets and two  bottles to use for the Draw so far.

I discussed the position with the Committee on Monday night and it was decided to postpone the Draw until January. My concern was that due to the poor weather teams have been prevented from playing their matches and contact with the teams has been restricted.

I will distribute the remaining tickets to the Managers who have not yet received theirs and will advise a date in January when I will complete the draw. Can I ask you to make every effort to sell them and supply a bottle for a Prize.

Many thanks, Dave Nelthorpe

       Happy New Year

To all our Supporters, Sponsors, Members, Parents and their Families, we wish them all a very Happy and Prosperous New Year.

Thank you all for supporting your Team and our Club.

Can You Help?

We are continually on the lookout for assistance in many areas. With this in mind the Club has put in place plans to recruit individuals to help in designated areas within our Club. Meetings have been organised and interesting discussions have been entered into; ideas have come out of these discussions and we are now moving forward to the next stage.

We will reflect on these discussions and plans will be made very early in 2016 to make arrangements for these ideas to become reality. If anyone is interested in hearing about what we have in mind please contact our Club Chairman or any Management Committee Member.

WFYFC will always be forward thinking and make plans ahead of any potential areas of concern; we believe that working from a position of strength is the best way the Club can move forward and so anyone interested in working with us is welcome to get in touch.

Please give this item serious thought, any input or assistance from anyone is always appreciated. Call or email (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or 07956 125851) for further information.

We have specific needs in the areas of GRANT APPLICATIONS, PITCH WORK, MARKETING, FUNDRAISING, COACHING and ADMINISTRATION. If you have a skill and have some spare time please consider helping one of the best voluntarily run groups in the area. Remember, we do it for our kids!

Christmas Raffle

Raffle Tickets are now available for all Coaches to collect from Dave Nelthorpe. A bottle donation from each team would be very much appreciated as we attempt to maximise the return from these tickets, please liaise through DN. Club Diaries are also available.

At the last General Committee Meeting our Club Chairman asked if anyone would be prepared to spending some time assisting the Club, but not on the Coaching side. As our Club grows considerably, so the workload of those Management Officials in place also increases. We are not looking for anyone to take on a significant role, but whatever skills an individual has and wants to offer would be much appreciated. Contact the Club Chairman or any Club Official for more details.

Watergate Pitches

We have had a recent inspection of our Pitches by the Institute of Groundsmen and Durham FA. They reported favourably on the current state of the playing surfaces with the work that has been done by GMS, our current contractor, working well. Herbicide treatments, slitting, tining and aerating the area is a positive way to keep them in good condition; there is no doubt that the pitches are better now than they have every been.

However we recognise that adverse weather causes problems as the drainage is not functioning as it should. It is believed that underground problems, perhaps blockages, breakages etc. are responsible for this.

The IOG will furnish us with a full report following this paid-for inspection. Our Club Executive will then put together a suitable plan of action for the future of our playing surfaces. Positive comments from most players and officials who use the pitches is a reflection of our considerable investment in the area; our ultimate aim is to have some kind of all-weather playing surface available at Watergate in the future.

We have invested heavily in the Pavilion at Watergate, it is now perhaps time that we look at our pitches.    BB, October 2015

Annual General Meeting … Sunday the 14th of June

A fantastic turnout of Coaches and Assistants from our teams for the AGM. All the Management Committee were re-elected and our Club President thanked everyone for their support over the past season. The Club Chairman stated that the Club had progressed significantly in the last three years and this development would continue with additional teams next season.

Everything that is good about WFYFC was proudly on display and demonstrated in the discussions during the evening. It was agreed that the Club can never stand still and so more assistance, help, advice, opinions and suggestions would be welcome in the future.

We pride ourselves on being an open, honest and respected Club and this policy would not change in the future, next season would be our 35th in Youth Football. Thanks to everyone who has assisted us in the past and we look forward to a bright future.

Sad to see them go … Saturday the 6th of June

Our U18 Team for the 2014-2015 Season, their last with our Club, thanks lads.

At Presentation Night we had the U18 Team with us for the last time; their time with the Club is now finished from a playing perspective. Two of the players received 10-year Trophies for their committment to our Club, fitting recognition for years of service.

They are always welcome back in whatever capacity they choose and our grateful thanks to their Coach for many years PAUL WILLIAMS and his Assistants DAVE BELSHAW and JOHN HOME, thanks guys!

To all those others who have left the Club for whatever reasons, we thank them for their service and friendship and wish them all the very best for the future.

Presentation Night … Saturday the 6th of June

Another Fantastic Night of Celebration. Congratulations to all our members for their achievements last season and to the individual award winners. The winning of Leagues and Cups is now a regular occurrence and there is no doubt that this is down to the quality of players and the coaching offered. We are getting stronger and better as a Club and it was wonderful to see so many happy and smiling faces.

The Chairman presented the Lorenne Barber Memorial Trophy to DYLAN ROBERTS of the U12Y (above left) and the David Watson Memorial Cup to JORDAN BELL of the U17s (above right), many congratulations to both of them.

The 2014-15 Players of the Season

Photographs from Camera Angles were available on the night and also through their Website (www.camera-angles.co.uk).

The Bucket Collection for Olivers Army raised £423 and the profit from the first auction item of £580 was donated by the Club and added to this as well, so thanks for all your support for such a worthy cause.

The comments over the weekend suggest that everyone had a great night. The Club recognise that some disorder occurs during such a busy and over-subscribed evening and will work with Coaches and anyone else who has suggestions to improve this in the future.
